Skedco Inc was founded in 1981 by Bud and Catherine Calkin for the purpose of manufacturing and marketing the Sked Stretcher. Since that time the Sked has been responsible for hundreds of lives being saved by fire/ rescue, industrial, Military, cavers many other rescue / EMS organizations. Skedco's first 10 years were very lean years. The products were so different that very few people actually bought them. In the early 90's OSHA mandated that industry must be prepared for confined space rescues. Industry teamed up with Fire Service and found the Sked to be the most efficacious confined space litter anywhere. Rescue teams started using Sked in many other rescue disciplines and Skedco started to grow. During that initial 10 year period Skedco began producing the Rapid Deployment Water Rescue Sked System, medical packs, rescue tripods and other products. During "Operation Desert Storm" Sked became a major part of Military rescue, especially with the MEDEVAC helicopter and Special Forces units. They were hoisting Skeds by helicopter and continue to do so even today. After Desert storm Skedco grew even faster because the Military found that the Sked did everything Skedco claimed and much more. These products were utilized by the US Military but not just for patient evacuation. They used Skeds to haul equipment. Even today the Sked is referred to as the "combat delivery vehicle".
