Congress passes FY 2008 appropriations bill

The U.S. Congress signed into law at the end of December legislation that appropriates Fiscal Year 2008 (FY 2008) funds for all federal agencies except the Department of Defense. According to the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), funding for the Department of Home- land Security's (DHS) Office of State and Local Programs, including the Assistance to Firefighters Grant and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant programs, increased from $2.53 billion in FY 2007 to $3.2 billion. This figure includes $950 million for the State Homeland Security Grant program and $820 million for the Urban Area Security Initiative.
