On a large sclr,the american fire service has adopted a minimum initial attack handline flow of 150 gallons per minute (gpm) for an aggressive interior attack in residential structure fires.1 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1410, Standard on Training for Initial Emergency Scene Operations, 2010 edition, and 1710, Standard for the Organization and Deployment of Fire Suppression Operations, Emergency Medical Operations, and Special Operations to the Public by Career Fire Departments, 2010 edition, recommend that the first two handlines placed in service flow a combined total of 300 gpm once all first-alarm resources have arrived on scene. Several of the standard initial attack evolutions cited by NFPA 1410 provide that the first two lines flow 150 gpm each.2"3 In one specific incident, this minimum flow rate recommendation was accepted by a department only after experiencing several significant firefighter injuries and a line-of-duty death.
