My career in purchasing fire apparatus began when I was promoted to battalion chief in the Jersey City (NJ) Fire Department. Having been trained and working part time as a diesel truck mechanic, it was only natural that I was urged to fill the position of chief of fire apparatus for the city. One of the first things I did was to obtain a copy of National Protection Fire Association (NFPA) 1901, Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus, and begin to read and understand it. Back then, it was a very slim document with very few requirements. I also began to attend fire apparatus seminars.
