PPE: Changes Affecting PPE Choices and Decontamination

A FIRE Service Transformation for Addressing PPE Contamination Control" (PPE Supplement, Fire Engineering, January 2018) described the new thinking in treating structural fires as hazardous materials incidents within the fire service for creating better awareness of fireground contamination and encouraging departments to implement thorough and effective cleaning. "PPE: Reshaping Contamination Control" (January 2019) provided additional details for cleaning turnout gear and reviewing the direction on how new standards and practices were expected to affect the fire service. "PPE: Expanding Fire Service PPE Cleaning Practices" (January 2020) introduced new findings related to better understand contamination and decontamination with specific analyses of the impact of a revised National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1851, Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting (2020 edition); contamination pathways; preliminary exposure reduction; and efficacy of different cleaning approaches.
