IN 1997, THE PRISON IN FORT LAUDER-dale, Florida, was getting masonry repairs to the exterior of the eight-story structure. Building access needed to be restricted during renovation. The construction plan was to keep the swing-stage-or two-point suspended-scaffolding at the third story and the workers would be moved to the ground by a bucket truck. Every day, the contractors would take away the generator for the scaffold. This way, nobody could use the scaffolding from ground level as part of an escape plan. The prison housed convicted felons who were waiting for retrial. One of those inmates was Lloyd, who was convicted of murder. On July 20, 1997, from the high-security eighth floor, Lloyd managed to break out the 11-inch-wide bulletproof glass without being noticed. He grabbed the cables for the swing-stage and fell 50 feet onto the platform. He lay injured on the scaffold until he was spotted by a law enforcement helicopter.
