Vertical Stretching in Multiple Dwellings

EVERY ENGINE COMPANY IS DEDICAT-ed to getting the first line in operation at a multiple dwelling. There are not many "always" and "nev-ers" in the fire service, but this should be at the top of that small list. Everyone reading this probably responds to some sort of multiple dwelling, whether it is a single-story nursing home, a garden-style apartment complex, or that stereotypical Main Street three-story mixed occupancy that is old and ready to burn. Some of these stretches will be long-whether vertical stretches up narrow stairwells or long courtyards that require multiple hands to get that first line in position. It is okay if it takes two, three, or even four engines to do this job! True professionals are not concerned with beating the first line to the door with one of their own. We all understand one of the most important sayings in the fire service, "The fire goes as the first line goes!"
