The Northshore Fire Department Headquarters Fire Station No. 51 is sited just north of Lake Washington and serves multiple communities in the greater Seattle area. The 2.5-acre site hosts administrative, operational and training functions. Responding to city design guidelines, the 32,ooo-square-foot main building fronts south and east perimeter streets with massing and right-of-way improvements geared toward a pedestrian-friendly urban environment. Artwork is incorporated into the expressed structure of the lobby which is open to the public and provides access to a large community meeting space and department services. Crew living and quarters are located on the second floor with two dedicated response stairs leading directly into the five-bay apparatus room. The main building also houses a fire prevention and training division. The firefighters have ready access to the 55-foot high, five-level training tower at the center of the site. Exterior materials include concrete, steel, brick, wood siding and metal panels.
