Cherry

Cherry lumber is sawn from the black cherry tree (Prunus serotina), which is a member of the plum family. The cherries are very small, but are edible and sometimes are made into a beverage called rum cherry. The tree is found from Nova Scotia to Minnesota to Texas to Florida. But most people believe that the best colored cherry comes from Pennsylvania, with New York and West Virginia a close second. Unfortunately, heavy cutting has reduced these premium supplies, resulting in very high prices for the lumber. This has been a prized furniture wood since the 18th Century here in the U.S. It was used for dishes, musical and scientific instruments, and tools and handles, as well as furniture.
