Q: Are there any issues regarding the accuracy of moisture meter readings, pin or non-pin, when testing pre-finished material? My instincts tell me that many cabinet carpenters and installers would choose the non-pin-type meters for ease of use, and because on the "no pin mark" aspect.rnA: There are two types of portable moisture meters. One, the pin type, measures the electrical resistance between two pins that are driven into the wood and the current between the pins is measured. The resistance is related to moisture content of the wood. The other, the pinless, measures the electrical inductance, using a flat plate that is in contact with the wood surface. Which type of meter is best? Both have some advantages and both have some disadvantages.
