Capesize rates dipped, Panamax rates rose and Handy rates were left largely unchanged in the first week of the year - yielding nothing obvious in the way of emerging patterns. Yet signs for both short and medium-term rate development are encouraging. Steel industry order books are, with the possible important exception of Japan, looking increasingly healthy. This bodes well for coal and ore carriers as well for those that ship the finished product.
