Over the Finnish line

Like many other European yards, Finland's major shipbuilding group, Kramer Masa-Yards, which has shipyards in Helsinki and Turku,is facing a crisis of historic proportions. If new orders are not won soon the yard, famed for its innovative designs for cruise liners, passenger ships and gas carriers, could be forced to dose one or both of its yards, seek a merger with fellow Finnish shipbuilder Aker Finnyards or another partner, or go to the wall. As of April, around 800 workers had been temporarily laid off in Helsinki and Turku, as had more than 100 who were recently laid off temporarily at Aker Finnyards, even though both yards won orders for newbuildings last autumn.
