Daily hire rates for post-Panamax box ships have landed hard in the first fixture in this size category this year. Geneva-based MSC, which has remained quite active despite the widespread gloom, is reported to have taken the German 5,762teu Eft. France at $8,000 a day for 24 months plus 12 months option in the Far East. The long period reflects owners' resigned expectations for the medium term.rnMSC has not cut back its capacity to the same degree as most other global operators and appears determined to expand its market share in the current climate. The line also fixed another sub-Panamax type, the gearless 2,846teu HS Scott, at $5,700/day for a timecharter trip from the continent out to the Far East. Meanwhile Hapag-Lloyd extended the geared 2,492teu E.R. Wilhelmshaven at $5,700 a day for two months in Asia, thus signposting the way forward for this key market segment.
