For anyone who doubted that environmental protection represents both a commercial opportunity and an operational necessity, Maersk Line's decision to become the first fully certified member of the Clean Shipping Index (CSI) is another wake-up call. With the broader UN regulatory process on emissions unlikely to show many concrete results for shipping in the short term and with the impact of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) yet to be fully understood, the attractiveness of voluntary schemes such as the CSI and Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) is obvious.
