ECDIS: misunderstood, confused but soon to be mandatory

Although the first deadline for mandatory electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS) installations is still 10 months away, events this week and last could have an important bearing on how much shipowners have to spend on equipment and training. This week, the International Hydrographic Organisation expects to finalise some innovative test data that it hopes will be distributed next month so ships' officers can check whether their ECDIS software complies with the latest international standards (see p27). If it does not, it will need fixing. At least the test will be free.
