Rim-driven thrusters (RDTs) have been understood and prototypes tested for several years. The design features permanent magnet motors in a rim driving a propeller in the centre. At the September SMM exhibition and conference in Hamburg, Rolls-Royce confirmed it had delivered the first of its recently developed permanent magnet tunnel thrusters (TT-PM). Norwegian company Olympic Shipping will install and operate it on the Olympic Octopus, (2006, 2,600dwt) an anchor handling supply tug.
