Finns see wood exports float up as paper blots its copybook

Japan, China, and Egypt are the leading destinations for increased exports of Finnish timber products. Sawn timber, after some years in the doldrums, is seeing a revival in demand. "Sawmills are working at full capacity, but only on two shifts," Finnish Sawmill Association (FSA) CEO Kai Merivuori told Finnish business daily Kauppalehti, "so there's still plenty of slack to take up current profitability, [which is] is still insufficient to strengthen all their balance sheets." Although Merivuori is cautiously positive about the short-term outlook, many risks remain.
