U.S. crude oil production could reach 10 million barrels per day (bbl/d) by 2040, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported in June. In its Annual Energy Outlook 2013, EIA's reference case projects production in the range of 6 million to 8 million bbl/d over the next 30 years. However, the EIA also developed a high-resource scenario, in which crude oil production would jump to 10 million bbl/d between 2020 and 2040. Under the high-resource scenario, total U.S. liquid fuels production - crude oil, natural gas liquids, refinery gains, biofuels and other liquid fuels - would increase to more than 18 million bbl/d in 2040, compared with 12 million in the reference case.
