Bulkers dominate new year ordering activity

Newbuilding orders placed at the start of2014have beenled bythe bulk carrier sector, with Chinese shipbuilders in particular benefiting from something of a dry cargo shipbuilding renaissance. Orders recently confirmed by IHS Maritime included an order penned by China's Sinotrans, which contracted four Ultramax units at sibling Jinling Shipyard. The SDARI Dolphin 64-class ships were contracted at $25.8M each, with delivery from 1H15. Sinotrans Shipping and Jinling Shipyard are subsidiaries of Sinotrans & CSC Holdings. Meanwhile, Sinopacific Group-owned shipbuilder Yangzhou Dayang has won an order from Greek shipowner Diana Shipping, through a separate wholly owned subsidiary, for a single Kamsarmax bulker for delivery in 2Q16.
