Japan seeks to buoy Asian LNG imports

An oversupply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in its own market and a desire to optimise shipping costs are behind Japan's USD10 billion plan to enable LNG imports into Asia. The initiative, which was unveiled in October at the LNG Producer-Consumer Conference in Tokyo by Japan's minister of economy, trade, and industry, Hiroshige Seko, aims to develop import infrastructure in Asia, such as offloading terminals and power plants, and train 500 personnel over the next five years.
