An introduction of regulations for animal experimentation in Tokoku University and a role of laboratory animal technologists

In 2005, the Animal Welfare Act was amended in Japan. Accordingly the official regulations for animal experiments was newly established in Tohoku University on Jun 27th, 2007,and has been enforced officially from Octlst,2007. This new regulation semphasize the importance of implementing educational activities on animal experimentation, as well as the responsibilities of the president of the university, the duties of institutional committee for animal experimentation, and the role of managers in charge of supervising laboratory animals and related facilities. 1 have been appointed the laboratory animal manager by the director of medical school. In Tohoku University, every faculty is required for arranging at least one laboratory animal manager taking charge of assisting the director of faculty, checking the application forms of animal experiment protocol or required facilities for raising and keeping animals, and giving some advices to researcher or raiser and so on. In addition, I, as a laboratory animal technologist, bear more responsibilities of providing some suggestions on how to lay out animal facility, how to fulfill the animal welfare, and how to perform appropriate feeding and handle animals correctly. We are looking forward to play important roles by performing our duties as animal technologists in the new era. In this paper, I am going to introduce the new system and the new role of animal technologist according to the regulation of Tohoku University.
