Citrix's XenDesktop 2.1 represents a modest improvement over the previous version but is a pacesetter in the nascent VDI category. XenDesktop relocates some the most onerous desktop management tasks—OS updates and patches-back in the data center, where central staff can more easily control images. XenDesktop's ability to discard user-initiated changes to the virtual machine is an added bonus, enabling IT to hand out clean desktop systems to users at every boot-up. The amount of physical infrastructure needed to centrally host the virtual desktops along with extensive and sometimes costly license fees leaves plenty of room for IT managers to stick with the tried-and-true desktop management methods.
