Testing the Transformation

In 2012, we can expect to see a technological transformation rivaling that wrought by electrification, telephony, and the dawn of the automobile age a century ago. That's according to Mark P. Mills, a physicist and founder of the Digital Power Group, and Julio M. Ottino, dean of the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Northwestern University. Those earlier innovations, they wrote Jan. 30 in the Wall Street Journal, initiated "...a century of phenomenal economic growth.The transformation occurring now, noted Mills and Ottino, is driven by big data (embodying cloud computing), smart manufacturing, and the wireless revolution. It is bringing about rapid changes in the nature of design, test, and manufacturing, based on presentations at DesignCon Jan. 31-Feb. 2 in Santa Clara, CA.
