AXIe = Bigger Building Blocks

Like VXI, PXI, and PXIe before it, the AXIe modular test system standard is based on a pre-existing computer standard. In this case, the Advanced TCA (ATCA) open architecture was the starting point. Most of the mechanical and electrical features have been retained so that similar to the compatibility between cPCI and PXI, properly designed modules can be used in either ATCA or AXIe chassis. The specification AXIe-1 Revision 2, Sept. 5, 2013 stated, "Unlike ATCA, AXIe systems are often used in laboratory and production environments. These environments are typically different than the central office equipment room environments where ATCA equipment is usually deployed," The predominately telecom use of ATCA systems accounts for many of the AXIe changes such as having only 14 slots within a 19-inch EIA rack rather than 16 in a larger telecom chassis.
