Electrical engineering might be traced back over 2,600 years to Thales of Miletus, who noted that rubbing fur on amber would cause an attraction between the two materials. He doesn't seem to have described any practical applications for this property, however. The inventers of the "Baghdad Battery" (c. 250 B.C.E.), possibly used for electroplating, may have been the first electrical engineers, but few archeologists believe the artifact was, in fact, a battery.
