Programmes and projects launched by the European Commission to provide development assistance reached around 140 developing countries in 2009. The priority was to help the world's poorest to face the triple economic, food and environmental crisis.rnIn its annual report, published on 28 June, on the implementation of the EU's development and external assistance policies in 2009, the Commission estimates that between 40 million and 80 million people in developing countries have been forced into absolute poverty.
