The institutional set-up: an analysis of social pedagogues' accounts of treatment in everyday practice Det institutionelle arrangement: en analyse af socialpædagogers redegørelse for behandling i hverdagen
Residential care institutions for children at risk are still a poorly understood institutional arrangement. Using complexity theory as a framework, the aim of this article is to analyse how social pedagogues at such institutions model the relationship between themselves and the children in care. Eleven focus-group interviews were conducted, based on a case vignette technique. The findings suggest a distinction between pedagogical coherence and obligation, implying that procedures for handling difficult episodes may exist independently of existing treatment programmes. The consequences for understanding institutional practices are outlined.
