Why would we care about privacy?

This editorial is about privacy in the information age, future opportunities for research, and how the EJIS community of editors and scholars are uniquely positioned to make a significant impact on the advancement of its understanding. While there are many physical aspects of privacy, the particular relevance and biggest developments concern information privacy. Societal discourse has come to equate privacy and information privacy and this editorial does so as well. With the ubiquitous collection, storage, analysis, and sharing of digital data, the explosion of information technology (IT), e-commerce, social networks, and government surveillance, privacy has become a pervasive issue in both the private and public sector.
