Latin America is of course a vast continent and difficult to cover with any degree of comprehensiveness, but Jairo Lugo-Ocando has brought together 14 essays that cover Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela. It is therefore geographically wide-ranging but it also tackles a broad range of media topics across the collection as a whole. Lugo-Ocando himself writes a scene-setting introduction to media systems and spaces in Latin America, and with Andres Canizalez offers a final chapter discussing regional integration and the possibility of a common Latin American public sphere. In this respect, they look at the case of Telesur, the new cross-national television network, and consider Latin American media in the context of geopolitical relations with the US. Censorship and state control loom large as issues in the book, but questions of ownership, organization and regulation, political elites, power and democracy are also salient.
