摘要

The mass media are central to the way modern democracies work: what they say and do provides members of the public with the information that allows them to be active citizens, so that how the media behave is critical in establishing the health or otherwise of the democratic process. Gavin deals with a very important subject. He begins by looking at the role of the media in reporting politics, what is expected from the press and television, and what should be expected from them in terms of desirable and realistic objectives and outcomes. His main focus is on BBC and ITV news, with the evidence coming from an archive of television news stories drawn in an unbroken line from the late 1990s to the early 2000s.
