The interaction of cultures and processes of globalization profoundly affects some of the key informing categories of our lives: identity and belonging, cultural expression and creative practice, individual and community, civil society and nation, citizenship and consumerism, tradition and change. Yet how they are affected is manifold and complex, as well as ever changing, and there is still a great deal that is poorly documented and patchily understood. The purpose of this large volume, which initiates a series in culture and globalization, is to begin redressing this situation by exploring the question of conflict: culture as conflict, conflict within culture and conflict between cultures, in their relationship with globalization. Conflicts are of course various and different in kind, and the book attempts to embrace these in their broad general range. Helmut Anheier and Yudhishthir Ray Isar have recruited over two dozen writers to cover the diverse facets of the relationship between culture, conflict and globalization. Regional variations are well represented, as are cross-cultural tensions and fault lines in the contemporary world.
