摘要

Prior to the cinema, the theatre was among the most popular forms of large-scale entertainment. Its significance in this respect is reflected in the anxious concern of social and political elites with stage productions and in the consequent censorship that was imposed on 19th-century drama across a number of different countries. In dealing with such censorship, this volume collects together chapters concentrating on particular European countries: Germany, France, Russia, Spain, Italy and the Hapsburg monarchy. Each chapter ends with a bibliographical essay that readers will find of considerable value. England is omitted from the mix for the simple reason that there has already been a good deal published on English censorship of the stage, whereas this is not true (or not as true) of the countries included.
