Marc Bekoff has argued for a number of years that the range of animal behaviors has been seriously underestimated. In this latest volume, he joins his expertise as an ethologist with that of a philosopher, Jessica Pierce, to pull together the central threads of his position. The crux of their shared view is that morality is not an exclusively human institution: 'we're not alone in the moral arena' (p. 152).The point here is not the familiar one that morality has to have come from somewhere, that it must be rooted in proto-moral behavior pre-dating biologically modern humans. Their claim is the stronger one that other animals, including non-primates, engage in fully-fledged moral behaviors.
