摘要

We do not and cannot know yet what environmental ethics could or should be. Our moral imaginations may be sufficient for us to extend familiar principles of moral consideration, taken for granted as applicable to 'us,' and apply these beyond the merely human sphere, at least in principle. The problem, in part, is that in advance of such consideration we already conceive of the human sphere as apart from nature, and our practices reinforce our concepts. We are lacking in experience, not just with the environment as it exists apart from and surrounding humanity, but with a nature that is not already denatured and diminished by a history of carelessness and with a humanity that has not already lost touch with its origins in the Earth.
