As Paradigms Turn: What it Might Mean to be Green

Professor Hall (2013) is surely correct that environmentalism's framing of the choices before us needs to be not only more positive but also more complex, inclusive and simply honest. Reformism's tendency to couple apocalyptic warnings with the most timid on-the-ground program naturally leads to the perception of bad faith; while those of us who embrace radical change too often overemphasize the potential gains and unjustifiably discount or ignore the very real costs and losses, especially to those who may not share the same values. Honest 'framing' requires that these sacrifices, necessary as they may well be, also be acknowledged and addressed.
