Frames without Lenses: A Response to Hall's 'What Will it Mean to be Green?'

To survey the volume of research on framing and productively connect it to an issue of immense importance to citizens, scholars, and activists such as climate change is commendable. To have done so and well, as Cheryl Hall (2013) has, is more impressive. Her approach crystallizes the stakes: incompatible values render attempts to avoid 'loss' from climate change moot. Her analysis, while humbly avoiding any such claim, points beyond the terms of the debate to its failings and enables us to see the extent to which trenchant values that would enable guidance on climate change remain to be articulated.
