In The Failure of Environmental Education, Saylan and Blumstein articulate the problems with contemporary environmental education in America and suggest ways that it could do more to improve the overall state of the natural environment. Chapter 1 begins with an overview of contemporary environmental problems and the current status of environmental policy. This discussion is up to date and well integrated, but not extensive. For someone in the field of environmental studies or environmental education, it may be of little service; however, for a newcomer, this chapter provides a general idea of 21st-century environmental problems.
