The Twickel Umfassungsweg takes you right into the landscape

While working on the radical/extensive renovation of garden and landscape on the Twickel estate in Twente, landscape architect Michael van Gessel also came across the Umfassungsweg. This footpath over the grounds of the estate was thought up around 1890 by Petzold, one of the landscape architects who worked at Twickel. He conjured up grandiose plans for the park near the house and the surrounding landscape. The Umfassungsweg was intended to encircle the heart of the estate, enabling the baron to ride in his carriage around his own lands. At the time only some parts were com- pleted, partly because Petzold died shortly after work on the path had begun.
