Wouter Vanstiphout is the first Chair for Design as Politics at the TU Delft. He is a founder of Crimson Architectural Historians, a Rotterdam-based group which engages with city-making through direct interventions and historical research. Vanstiphout participated in both the Venice Biennale and the IABR this year, and lived to tell the tale. JB: What did you think of this year's IABR, as you also participated in the last IABR? WV: For the 2009 Biennale, Kees Christiaanse, the curator that year, asked Crimson to handle the theme Maakbaarheid which is the special Dutch word that means 'make-ability' We took that literally and set up real projects. We didn't simply design them as you see in typical architecture shows. We followed a path of inquiry and talked to stakeholders, politicians, community members and NGOs.
