According to Stefan Rau, this years' General Rapporteur, the title of the congress 'Fast Forward: Planning in a (hyper) dynamic urban context' reflects the need for planning professionals to guide urbanization effectively and responsibly. It is common knowledge that environmental and climate change, along with rapid social and economic transformations, demand not only a 'fast forward' planning paradigm, but also innovative and unprecedented ways of communicating with all actors, stakeholders and citizens. Nicholas You, chairman of the UN World Urban Campaign, emphasized the need for a new paradigm in planning for rapid urbanization when he stated that 'pro-active and smart planning will determine to a large degree how successful we will be in making our cities and our planet more sustainable.'
