Adaptive seaward extension plan for Copenhagen

A consortium of two Norwegian design firms, 700 N arkitektur and Dahl & Uhre Arkitekter, is one of the three winners in an international ideas competition for a new urban area with 40,000 inhabitants and 40,000 jobs, commissioned by the port authorities and city of Copenhagen in Denmark. Their plan 'Excentral Park - Edge Dynamics' presents a new vision of how to deal with uncertainty in a project that is to develop on the 200-hectare former harbour site of Nordhavn close to Copenhagen's city centre.rnThe basic tenet of the structure plan is the assumption that, in the course of 50 years, many different futures will be possible. It presents itself, therefore, as an exploratory cartography, which only insists on its being a first-order visitor's place for all of the 0resund region, from day one. This means it has to appeal to visitors and it has to be able to adapt, to be elastic, in order to remain such a place.Thus the basic structure of the plan consists of a number of elements that are fixed on the one hand, but adaptable on the other.
