An exquisite fence

Commissioned by the Amsterdam district council Oud-Zuid, Ruud Jan Kokke designed a particularly expressive fencing around the Olympiaplein sports park.This sports park is a part of the former complex built for the 1928 Olympics, designed by Berlage in the style of the Amsterdamse School and redesigned by VHPtandschapsarchitecten in 2004.The park has three entrance gates and is entirely enclosed by a monumental fence of arched steel railings. The fence's curves pick up the rhythm of the old Lombardy poplars along it, with a bulge every 20 metres. Also the twists in the steel make the design of the railings'surface relief visually rounded, which enhances their embracing motion.
