With the Bauhaus and its affiliated buildings as well as the park of the Dessau-Worlitz Garden Realm, Dessau possesses cultural sites of worldwide importance. Nevertheless, in the first fifteen years after German reunification, the number of residents shrank from 101,000 to 79,000. This process is irreversible and has repercussions on the urban fabric. The goal of the "Landscape Corridor" ("Landschafts-zug") project designed by the landscape architecture firm C23 (Sigrun Langner, Malte MaaG, Michael Rudolph) of Leipzig is to prevent the imminent perforation of the city. Sornfar, derelict sites have come about through demolition more or less haphazardly, without a recognisable overall urban design concept for converting them. And yet this is all the more necessary seeing as how these areas not only were defined by their mainly industrial former uses but also have become firmly established in the consciousness of the population.
