Zorrotzaure Masterplan

The masterplan for the peninsula Zorrotzaure in Bilbao is a good example of CROSS.MAX.'s 'Ecological Wonderbra'. A dilapidated 64-ha docklands along the river Nervion has been ecologically reactivated to become an attractive residential-cum-working area connected with the riverside. Instead of providing a strictly two-dimensional interpretation, GROSS.MAX. have, in collaboration with Zaha Hadid Architects and ARUP, come up with a plan from a three-dimensional angle. The surrounding topography and the bend in the river have been introduced intornthe new grid. A saw-like structure follows the dynamics of the river's flow, a topography adapted to the tidal changes. In the grid, clusters of slender freestanding buildings rise up, oriented towards the riverside, sunlight and view. By increasing the height of the buildings at both ends of the island, Zorrotzaure's new skyline bears a resemblance to the densely built-up waterfronts taking years to develop. GROSS.MAX. in detail designed the green fingers interwoven with the urban structure of the buildings.
