Hamburg's desire to leap across the Elbe

IBA Hamburg has reached midterm. The city of Hamburg has taken the German instrument of an international building exhibition, IBA (which runs from 2007 to 2013) as a kind of life-research laboratory with the intention of improving living conditions. Architecture, urban development and social and cultural projects are to be the pivots for responsible growth, aimed at bringing together the city's centre and the underprivileged urban districts on the Elbe River Island. The objective is to set an example for other large cities with this approach to complex and urgent problems.
