If there is one spatial development which has caused a great deal of commotion in recent years, it is the plan to separate the former island of Wieringen from the polder landscape of Noord-Holland by creating a new lake between the old coast land and the polder. This new waterway is to be built to the south of Wieringen and is intended to connect the Amstelmeer with the IJsselmeer.rnIt is hoped that the lake will give the surrounding area an urgently needed economic boost, and so it focuses on improving environmental development, on the agricultural situation and on increasing recreational opportunities. More than 2000 houses are to be built around the lake, predominantly for recreational use.
