Urban design plan for IJburg, Amsterdam

IJmeer became very popular towards the end of the mid-90s when, as part of the government policy on spatial planning, it was one of the few locations offering greater scope for residential development near Amsterdam. The urban design plan for IJburg includes a new urban extension for Amsterdam of 18.000 houses on a 450 ha area of newly reclaimed land in the IJmeer. The plan was developed by Palmboom & Van den Bout Stedenbouwkundigen in collaboration with H + N + S Land-schapsarchitecten and the Amsterdam Department of Physical Planning, and was based on the concept of an archipelago. It is to be built on six islands of various sizes, all linked by individually designed bridges.
