In the target paper entitled 'Conception of the cognitive engineering design pro- blem', object of this peer commentary edition of Ergonomics, we asked the question how might the discipline of cognitive engineering be advanced? By considering the discipline 'matrix' of cognitive engineering, we suggested the entities that mark the emergence of engineering form technical creaft. Key amongst those entities was a conception, or the view of its general problem held by an engineering discipline. A concpep- tion provides the concepts with which design problems and solutions can be formulated.
