A decade has elapsed between the publication of the second and third editions of Evaluation of Human Work. During this time, there have been many developments in the field and the new edition reflects this, by updating and extending the material that was covered in the previous version. It could be argued that the title of the book is increasingly misleading, because the scope is not just limited to evaluation, but includes material on aspects of systems design, for example. Whilst Evaluation of Human Work is not designed to be read from start to finish, most readers will do well to start with Wilson's opening chapter (Methods in the Understanding of Human Factors). In it, he lays out the big picture for much of what follows in the book and offers a brief look at the future, noting how complex interacting and distributed socio-technical systems are becoming the norm in work and beyond. These changes are already reshaping the way that ergonomics research and practice are carried out.
