The rules of work: a practical engineering guide to ergonomics

The author states that his goal when writing the book was to convert what he has learned in the workplace into a framework with simple, positive and practical guidance. The book is in two parts: (ⅰ) the rules and (ⅱ) measurements and guidelines. In Part 1 the reader is provided with an overview of the field of ergonomics which is defined as an interdisciplinary field of study that seeks to design tools, equipment and tasks to optimise the human interface and thus maximise human capabilities. The author takes time to explain that in ergonomics, knowing the difference between a principle and a solution to a problem is important because they are two different things: the principles never change but the solutions might. The book devotes a short chapter to each of the specified 'Principles' which covers working in neutral postures, reducing excessive force, keeping items within easy reach, providing suitable working heights, reducing repetition, reducing static muscle work, avoiding pressure points, providing sufficient clearance, remaining mobile and ensuring the surrounding environment is comfortable. Each section is accompanied by a series of illustrations designed to highlight some of the problem areas as well as to provide an example of improvement. The commentary offers simple direct advice which makes it clear what should be avoided in the workplace and what should be in place.
